I can't speak for Sebald, of course, but I see 'fiction' in this instance as outright fabrication, which can take the form of altering events, constructing fake biographies, scenes, whole characters--even if they are intended to illuminate a larger "truth"--whatever that is. The questiion of how one reconstructs events or people is more complex, but if a witer employs fabrication, they must indicate they are doing so for a specific limited purpose.Mark Derrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02422648888198441442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14908492.post-52807023529236267862006-09-08T12:00:00.000-04:002006-09-08T12:00:00.000-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Mark Derrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02422648888198441442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14908492.post-7090539565010920942006-09-08T01:03:00.000-04:002006-09-08T01:03:00.000-04:00oh, and one question: fiction vs. "what really hap...oh, and one question: fiction vs. "what really happened"? what's the difference?faculty for workplace justicehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03855536005538886946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14908492.post-72936796537653984842006-09-08T01:02:00.000-04:002006-09-08T01:02:00.000-04:00a beautiful, eloquent, and most moral piece of wri...a beautiful, eloquent, and most moral piece of writing. bravo mark.faculty for workplace justicehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03855536005538886946noreply@blogger.com
